Your Care Mission:

Pets can have a positive impact on quality of life. According to APlaceforMom.com, as little as just 15 minutes bonding with an animal sets off a chemical chain reaction in the brain, lowering levels of the fight-or-flight hormone, cortisol, and increasing production of the feel-good hormone serotonin. Over the long-term, these interactions have shown a decrease in lower cholesterol levels, improved mood and signs of protecting against heart disease and stroke. This may be particular beneficial for seniors.

Some seniors may not be able to care for pets independently. That’s where you can come in! Here are five ways your senior neighbor, relative, or friend could benefit from a family pet:

  1. Invite a senior for a walk with you and your dog. Combine a great exercise with some quality time with your four-legged friend.

  2. Bring a well-behaved pet to visit a senior. Spread some joy by bringing your pampered pet to visit a senior.

  3. Invite a senior to visit your home and your pets. Not all pets can be transported easily. Whether you have a playful kitten or backyard chickens, interacting with your animals in your home can provide that “feel good” connection some seniors may enjoy.

  4. Seniors as pet sitters. Maybe an active older adult doesn’t want the responsibility of owning a pet, but enjoys caring for them. Having them help you walk your dog or care for your cat while on vacation could be a benefit for you both.

  5. Share photos and stories. If you can’t share your cherished pet in person, bring photos and stories. They make great conversation starters and are likely to be a source of entertainment for both of you.

  1. We have a very high energy 2 yr old small dog who doesn’t really accept new people in his life! He is ok with those that come to our home to visit, after awhile! Very protective of us and wouldn’t be a good candidate for this mission! 😔. When my mother was in a care facility she fell in love with the dog that resided there! I know how comforting it can be! Our pup is a great companion US! 💙
