Say “Hi” to a Senior

Fact: Science shows that even small social gestures can have a positive impact on physical and emotional health. They even can extend life. Research also shows that seniors are more likely to be socially isolated, which can put them at even greater risk. But here’s the good news: even casual social interactions can help, which means you can make a difference.

Say “Hi” to a Senior

Saying “Hi” is a simple gesture, but don’t confuse simple with being unimportant. Science shows even small social interactions may extend life and have a positive impact on health. Unfortunately, seniors are at particular risk of social isolation.

Your mission is to put down your phone, look up, and say “hi” to as many seniors as you can this week. In the grocery store. On the street. Walking the dog. Just think about how one simple act of care can so easily spread smiles and positivity. And best of all, you might just help someone live a longer, happier life.

I had the blessing today of saying “Good Morning , how are you today” to an older adult working to set up chairs at a big conference in Omaha. This man’s beautiful older face lit up as he replied, “I’m feeling fine.. thank you for asking!”. We then properly introduced our selves and had a nice chat – it made my day.

The wonderful thing about sharing care is once you start noticing there are so many opportunities! I use to see elderly in the store and be afraid to ask, I have found by just smiling and asking if someone needs help most people say yes! It is wonderful, it has helped me connect in little ways.

I’m very fortunate and saying hi to seniors is easy to come by for me working in the senior community. This week I’ve meet several new seniors in my community, played checkers and dominos. Went to dinner with a newer senior acquaintance, now a friend and witnessed many others say “hi” to him while out and get hugs as we entered the restaurant. It was so heart warming. Took another out for ice cream the next night and she was welcomed with a warm greeting as well from the car hop who took her sundae over to her passenger window to personally make her smile and feel good when she noticed who it was for and how excited she was to be out for ice cream. Those “Hi’s” made those seniors days! They were better than the meal, the ice cream or the games I’m pretty sure. I will always continue saying Hi, something my grandmother and dad always made sure I knew was important to do.

I talked to the driver ( His Filipino guy) I told him to wait her ( the senior) she’s running to take the bus, then the driver waited her patiently with smiles too. How wonderful if you can see people like that ready to help in such way. Is it amazing ? Only few people made people comfortable.

    Hi, my name is Clara.
I am a caregiver for the last 6 years.
I cared for my grandparents when I was just 7 years old. In fact they meant the world to me. As I grew old I worked in sales and merchandiser. I gave up my job to care with compassion for elderly people. I found more satisfaction on this field because the people that are getting older sometimes are forgotten or they don’t have nobody to care for them . They need us other human being to be there and when you see hope in someone eyes is more rewarding than any job in the world.
I love to be a caregiver, I want to leave my memorie in someones life and make my own memories with them.
I cook, I clean, I offer transportation to the doctors office or I can make grocery shopping. In the years of experience with elderly I have been a good caregiver and everyone admired my devotion to my clients. When I start to work for them they are part of my family.
I am looking for jobs around Hagerstown, Frederick, Smithsburg Boomsboro.

On the way to run a quick errand we spotted an older gentleman bent over in his wheelchair, by himself in front of his home a few blocks from our home. We turned the car around and drove back to stop for a moment in front of the house until he looked up and waved to us. He had gone back inside apparently when we drove by on our way back home 30 minutes later. Thanks for making me more aware.

    I ALWAYS HELP SENIORS IN THE STORE, AND CHAT WITH THEM, YOU CAN LEARN ALOT FROM OUR ELDERS. IM 55 AND DISABLED SO I DO WHAT I CAN FOR THEM, THEY APPRECIATE THE LITTLE THINGS, AS I DO THE OLDER WE SEEM TO ENJOY THE LITTLE THINGS IN LIFE. I ALSO LIVE WITH MY MOM AND SHE HAS COPD AND ON OXYGEN 24/7. AND WE HAVE ALWAYS BEEN CLOSE, WE DO OUR BEST TO HELP EACH OTHER AND THAT SEEMS TO WORK OUT ALTHOUGH WE DON’T MOVE AS FAST AS WE USE TO. I WANT TO SHARE A LITTLE SAYING THAT WE SHARE;;
(AND IT IS STILL TRUE, NO MATTER HOW OLD YOU ARE
WHEN YOU GO OUT INTO THE WORLD. ITS BEST TO HOLD HANDS AND STICK TOGETHER.
TOGETHER WE CAN DO WHAT WE COULDN’T DO ALONE.)
IT COMES FROM COURSE IN MIRICLES… I LOVE THIS LITTLE INSPIRATION , AND I AM A BIG BELIEVER IN THE BUDDY SYSTEM. AND THAT REMINDS ME OF THAT. AND IT IS SO TRUE. EVEN THOGH I AM ON MY WAY OF BEING A FULL FLEDGE SENIOR ALTHOUGH II AM STILL A KID AT HEART. I WAS TAUGHT TO ALWAYS RESPECT MY ELDERS AND I DO,NO MATTER IF I KNOW THEM ARE NOT. BECAUSE THEY HAVE BEEN WHERE I AM AND HAVE WONERFUL WISDOM AND LIFE STORIES. I LOVE TO LISTEN TO THEM.

I made some seniors at the assisted living home laugh and smile! And they made me smile😜 one lady thought my husband was my SON. She said that he was very nice. Lol. I asked a senior male “Do I look old enough to be my husband’s mother?” He said, “Of course not! You look like you just crawled out of the crib!” The CNA nurse told everyone that now my husband was going to get the big head! I laughed and said, “He already has a big head!” Everyone in the dining room was laughing at our little unplanned skit at dinner. It was fun!😀

I’ve found that if you help elderly people that you get great joy for doing it, because they may not have anyone else that will help them.Unfortunatly a lot of the elderly are disowned by their children and family because of their needs and they just don’t want or have the time to do it.I’ve found that this is our generation of people that took care of someone as they were growing up and were sick, needed help with their bills and fed them. It’s disappointing to me to see someone that needs help and has no one to help them because I wonder just how many times they have taken care of someone in their life time and are now abandoned and alone, that’s sad ❗️🙏🏻

I gave some money to an elderly person in a Walmart store near my house to buy food for herself and I felt great doing it! I gave her 40$ when she only asked for 2 or three dollars and I asked her after I gave her the money I asked her if she needed more money to help her out for anything that came up that she would need to have money for.My heart was so sad that she had no one else that could help her and I thank the lord that I was there to help her!!

Would you look at my website and tell me if I can post it on this site. Thank you very much, http://www.justwearthem.info
Be sure to read the science on this, I think you will be Amazed, I was. The elderly are concerned about out living their money, and falling, this is an answer to prevent falling.

Hi I have been actively attempting to complete several important care missions on my own for approximately two years now. Let me briefly introduce myself to the community and see if anyone may have some better recommendations for me. Please don’t feel sorry for me because my story has only made me stronger.
My name is Michele and I am a 42 year old career student, business owner, ex-manager for a local tax office (who has also been preparing taxes for a few family members, and friends for most of my adult life), I’m the mother of two wonderful biological children, soon to be step mother to 13 other children, a grandmother/stepgrandmother of four as well. I am also a recovering alcoholic/addict who was also diagnosed bipolar at 12, I am unfortunately also a victim of physical, mental, and sexual abuse.
My mother is a wonderful woman who has come along way since her hospitalization when I was 14 years old. She is now 66 (67 on November 1) and still works 70 hours per week in the mental health field. Her house is literally falling in around her, and I want to surprise her with a complete home make over before the mold exposed kills her. Can someone on her recommend government grants, or assistance that I can get with out her knowing?

I took care of my sons grandfather and grandmother when i found out things were not going well. I took his grandfather yo doctors had him diagnosed he had early stages of dementia which i already knew do to i had done the same for other extended family member in past. The kicker here was something i never encountered he had Parkinson’s desease and enlarged prostate. I looked up and researched both and was able to care for him and her since she was not handling situation and my sons father lived there also but he has been drinking his whole life and they enabled him throughout. It was the hardest challenge i drove 400 miles there and 400 miles back slept in my car many nights in yard. I decided to move up there when she would not let anyone help him in the home. I would give her numbers to care facilities and she would not call even told other family members and no one did anything. He would deficate and not be cleaned up well and he did not know how anymore how to do for himself. As the years progressed i took her grocery shopping all household chores and made several meals and madw sure he was srinking plenty of water and fluids per day plus helped to maintain his taking his meds. I also did multiple daily showers which included cut and trim of all facial hair and haircuts. Nails, hands and feet ,brushing teeth ,and dental appointments. Than i moved baxk home by mom because of other factors up north. I had to ask for gas money because it was costing me dearly and took out auto loans to maintain going up there even took her and him to an available nursing home and she turned it down and decided to be on list. No one in family cared that things were not well there. Even had her get a restraining order on son to get his verbal abuse to them stopped from his being drunk by 9am almost evety day. Took his abuse also which made it more difficult. Wanted to call elder abuse many times but family told me no as she did so often. Non the less i got a bad cold/pnemonia/bronchitis/sinusitus and was told by my doctor not to be around them for i could pass it on so the few family members my son and his girlfriend that were helping rarely but lived near i told had to help while i was ill. Needless to say then the worst went down he was having issues and colaspsed. I drove immediately there to the hospital in another state where he was my son was at work and showed after. I cleaned him up at hospital while there than went back to his wife and helped her. The long story short he passed and thier oldest son is threatening me by text that i stole from them and i never took a dime in fact i gave my time help in all including riping out kitchen floor falling hazzard, lawn care ,and painting outside of house plus bathroom adjustment ti make things easier for him and her to get out of high tub to a shower type. I did it all out of love he was a veteran and the most strong willwd soul i have wver known. If you had an issue he had the right answers and was a one of a kind mentor and father figure my son and i had. I would not have changed a moment of what i did for them they were family and si alot of wonderful things for me and my son. I just could not let him fall short he deserved the glory of being taken care of well and being healthy and happy. Also he barely spoke unless all were not around and when he did his sweet smile would get bigger and he kept asking me to take him to canada and i would drive around just to see him smile and he knew always where we were and how to get back home if we just got lost because i was not familiar with the areas. I am happy he is in heaven i feared the nights i was not there and god always had a way to get me there and it was only a few times she helped but my prayers were always there and provided so my contience is clean god knows what i did out of devotion and love.

I love elderly people and I think they have so much to share with the world! They need to feel like they are loved and that they matter in this World! I sincerely believe that for them, that loneliness is a killer. They may have no family or friends left alive in their lives, and therefore don’t have any social interactions with others, which can have a huge negative impact on their lives and their spirits… I want to donate my time to helping so many of them feel like they are special and spend time with them just talking and showing them that they mean the world to me, and that they matter in this world to me! I feel very strongly about isolation issues for Seniors, and I would like to make a difference in this area of their lives, and if someone could please contact me so I could be placed in a volunteer position in any capacity to drive to see these Seniors and spend time with them to show them they are wonderful, I love them, and that they matter to me in my life and in this world! I would so appreciate the opportunity to do this and I will do it for free! How about that? I’m in if given the opportunity to do this. My cell phone # is 925-640-3773. And I have evenings available during the week, and I am off work on Thursdays and Fridays. I welcome your call to discuss all this in detail to get going on doing this for any elder that has no one to show them they are special and they matter! Thank you! Julie Pieper, Napa, CA 94558

I am going into work today at a beautiful winery in Napa Valley & I am asking to have all the senior’s that come in to taste today that they will be placed in my section so that I can wait on them during their wine tastings today. I plan on comping their tastings, paying for their experience myself, if I can’t get my managements approval To do this for them as a total surprise today. Then I am going to make them laugh and smile throughout the whole tasting with me! But most of all, I am going to make them feel like royalty with rockstar access to our experience together today when they receive the 5 star service from me, and only because they are seniors & because they are special to me, my company, and the World, as that’s why all of this all happened for them today!

Woo Hoo! I think this is a fantastic idea and I’m so excited to go into work today and make this happen! I will repost about the outcome after I do this… Hopefully I can get back into this area to update you on how it all went! Feeling grateful for the opportunity to do this today and super excited now to get to work and make this a reality! Thank you God for my big heart and my brilliant mind you’ve given me so I could think this up to do it, oh yeah, I forgot to thank you God for providing me all the money I make too so that no matter who’s behind me on this, I can afford to do it and pay for this on my own, if need be! I love you for making this happen God and I pray for you to bring it about with flying colors!
