Scents, mementos, and sounds can take us back decades within seconds. This week, talk with a senior and recall the times you shared together or a special milestone in their life.

From a favorite family vacation to a milestone event, identify a few special memories to discuss. In addition to talking about the past, here are a few tips to incorporate multiple senses to help recreate memories.

  1. Make a “Memory Box.” Fill a box with scents and objects that represent a specific memory. For example, someone who loved the beach may enjoy a box filled with a coconut scented sunscreen, shells, sand, or photos.
  2. Play Music. Put together a playlist of songs from their life, break out the vinyl, or even sing songs together.
  3. Watch Videos. Pull out the old VHS tapes and watch home movies. You could also create a digital slideshow of old photos.

Stimulating their senses may help your senior loved one recall some of their most cherished memories.
