Reminisce with a Senior
Discover 3 ways to help share and preserve precious memories.
Scents, mementos, and sounds can take us back decades within seconds. This week, talk with a senior and recall the times you shared together or a special milestone in their life.
From a favorite family vacation to a milestone event, identify a few special memories to discuss. In addition to talking about the past, here are a few tips to incorporate multiple senses to help recreate memories.
- Make a “Memory Box.” Fill a box with scents and objects that represent a specific memory. For example, someone who loved the beach may enjoy a box filled with a coconut scented sunscreen, shells, sand, or photos.
- Play Music. Put together a playlist of songs from their life, break out the vinyl, or even sing songs together.
- Watch Videos. Pull out the old VHS tapes and watch home movies. You could also create a digital slideshow of old photos.
Stimulating their senses may help your senior loved one recall some of their most cherished memories.
