The Details: If you live with others, have you really thought about loneliness? What it might be like to go days with little human connection or interaction? You may be surprised to learn that more than 40 percent of seniors experience loneliness on a regular basis.

Can you go just ONE DAY with limited social interactions? You may be thinking, “Why would I do that?” We challenge you to take the One Day of Isolation Care Challenge to better understand the situation many seniors face every day, and then reach out to a senior who might feel lonely.

Care Challenge: One Day of Isolation

To complete this challenge, limit your interaction with others for just one day. It may be helpful to pick a weekend when you don’t have plans so you can avoid required work conversations, interactions, or appointments. Here are 5 tips for completing this challenge:

  1. Stay at home. Don’t shop, run errands, or have any casual interactions with others. Not even a simple “hi” at the checkout counter.

  2. Don’t speak to other adults or children.

  3. Stay off of social media, and definitely no conversations.

  4. No texting, phone calls, or emailing.

  5. Dine alone.

Could you do it? Let us know how far you got with this challenge. How did you feel?

  4. Actually I do it all the time but I don’t like to hear when elderly are alone for weeks at a time, I’m a CNA so I know how often the elderly are left lonely..family really needs to at the least visit, bring dinner, take them to dinner or to your house.. it’s your parents and you can’t care for them at least one day out of a week. So sad

  5. Our snow and brutal cold temperatures have kept many of us in unintentional isolation. This has been a good reminder of the isolation many face on a daily basis. Time passes ever so slowly and we have not been able to lift our own spirits.

  16. My care mission was loneliness
I had no contact with family or social media. I read 2 small books, and was alone with my thoughts. My pet cat was by my side and she as well seemed lonely, I didn’t play with her. I had no desire to cook a meal, so I snacked on bread, soup and juice .
I co.pleted my mission by saying a prayer, taking my medications and falling asleep on the couch. Today, I feel the same loneliness and I don’t wanna do anything. Not good!

  18. After i read this, i couldnt stop crying. I feel so horrible that i wasnt there for my grandma more esspicialy the months before she died. Even though she lived in a senior center she had to have delt with loneliness more than i cared to realize. Reading this mission it hit me like a ton of bricks and reality of how i wish more than anytging i could go back and even spend jus one more min with her so she wasnt lonely. I hope pwople can read this and not only soend more time with a senior loved or jus go out to ur locl senior sentor and randomly go up and have a good heartfelt conversation with a senior. Please, conversation n visiting means so much seniors makes a huge difference in their moods health everthing. Make a difference even a 5 min convo with someone will male thier whole week n give them a happy something to think/talk about to others
