According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 28 percent of people ages 65 and older live alone, predisposing them to social isolation. Your mission this week: attend or even host a BBQ with a senior! Make them feel welcome with conversation and yummy food. Soft cornbread, pulled pork, and baked beans are simple but delicious sides that are easier to eat and are BBQ staples to enjoy together.

But even after the party ends, don’t forget about spending time with your senior!

  • Send a friendly text message.
  • Call them.
  • Or even send a thoughtful card in the mail.

The smallest gestures can have the biggest impact on reducing senior isolation.

  5. Last weekend, we hosted a small, informal reunion of my dad’s 1953 high school class. We made it a classic BBQ. It was so fun to see them reconnect 66 years after graduating and to hear their stories. It meant so much to them!
