Your Care Mission:

In recognition of Fall Prevention Awareness Day, which falls annually on the first day of fall, evaluate a senior’s home for trip hazards or safety concerns. According to a survey*, 65% of adult children in the U.S. and an overwhelming 71% in Canada say their senior loved one has at least one home safety issue.

This week, discover common trip hazards and learn how areas of a home could be improved to help reduce the risk of falls.

3 Common Trip Hazards for Older Adults

  1. Bathrooms

Seniors who become unsteady or start to have balance problems could be tempted to grab on to a towel bar or shower curtain and put themselves at risk of falling.

How to Help: Install grab bars on the wall near the shower or tub.

  2. Dark Areas

Dark closets could not only be safety hazards, they could make dressing more difficult for seniors and increase the risk of tripping.

How to Help: Add lighting to closets and pantries.

  3. Clutter

Clutter throughout the house, especially in hallways, makes it difficult to maneuver and creates tripping hazards.

How to Help: Remove trip hazards like empty boxes or trash.

What are some of the biggest trip hazards you’ve seen?

  4. I removed all of the floor rugs in my home so my Mother doesn’t trip on them! This was a problem for her and without them, she hasn’t had any issues beyond that. But know that I know these other fall hazards, I will install them too! Thank you!

  6. The biggest hazards I’ve seen in seniors home involve multiple levels in a house. Especially those with just a couple stairs up into a kitchen from the living area. It seems the fewer steps, the less care is taken when negotiating them.

  16. I’d say throw rugs would be a top hazard around the house! Stairs and getting up and down from chairs and sofas when balance is a problem could be also be hazardous! When we remodeled our main bathroom we installed a new shower area with a corner seat and grab bars!

  26. Isaiah 46:4 ESV
Even to your old age I am He (God), and to gray hairs I will carry you. I have made, and I will bear; I will carry and will save.

In John 3:16, God send Jesus that none should perish. This is how great & unconditional God’s love is for His children. He will make the weak strong. He carries us when we can’t go on, & He promises never to leave or forsake us. So even when we feel alone or deserted, He is always there w/ those who loves Him. He is working behind the scenes on our behalf. He give you spare life this morning through His love & grace. He put people in place to take care of you, or either give you strength to care for yourself. Your bones may ache, but at least you can feel. He is Jehovah Jireah; He provide for your needs, & even put strangers in your path to care for you, when your love ones are not there. He is the all sufficient God.
