Your Care Mission:
More than one in five Americans older than age 65 don’t drive, according to the National Aging and Disability Transportation Center (NADTC). How are they getting around? Caregivers play an important role in helping older adults find rides. According to NADTC, 39% of caregivers spend five to 10 hours or more on the transportation needs of friends or relatives each week.
Your Care Challenge: Don’t Drive for a Day
- Pick a day and commit to not driving for 24 hours. Be sure it’s not a day you planned to spend at home anyway.
- Plan for your challenge by lining up rides or public transportation routes for your daily activities.
- Let us know how it impacted your life. How much time did you spend lining up rides? Did you miss out on something you really wanted to do?
According to NADTC, 40% of older adults cannot do the activities or chores they need or like to do because they do not drive. This exercise may help you better understand the challenge they face, and inspire you to offer a ride to a senior friend or relative.

I don’t have a vehicle to drive it needs work on it
I want be driving today
I want be driving today.
It’s funny that this weeks mission was stopping and taking time to talk to those around you, particularly the elders. I’ve felt overwhelmed as of lately out in public to do just exactly this. It’s truly a blessing to hear what some have to say…each person being unique in their own. I’ll continue to go out of my way…just never know when someone may just need a listening ear?
I typically do all my errands on the weekend and did not this weekend which drove me CRAZY! since I am low on certain household items I do not like to be low…but alas will wait until nxt weekend.
I stayed home today and got much done
I’ve experienced this with my parents, an older sibling, and two disabled friends who were/are a little older than I, but who often put the enabled to shame with their resilience. It is rewarding particularly now to help because I’ve been in seasons before without transportation and in a season where I needed transport to appointments. It is humbling and can also be time consuming to plan and get things lined up so the maximum number of errands and needs can be met in one trip so gas isn’t wasted and to keep you from feeling like you’re inconveniencing others. I can identify with this mission and hope to continue healing when called on when I can. What a blessing!
I will not drive even my electric vehicle today….
I have done this mission. But I cheated. I cheated because I tried to help somebody else with this problem. Unless You are rich and you can Uber everywhere whenever you want, You could go anywhere until you apply for participation in a shared ride. There are numerous agencies. However they only go with in certain boundaries and if your doctor isn’t in their boundary you’re out of luck. Further if you want to get their say 2 o’clock you might have to be ready by 12 because there might be 3 other people who are going to be dropped off 1st period then you will wait for your pick up maybe till 5 even though you’re done it 3. And forget it if you ride home needs to be after 430! Because they can’t do that!
I Then there is public transportation. What a joy to walk in the rain or snow or freezing weather or 98゚ weather. And what if you’re having trouble walking or climbing the stairs to get on the bus well then you’re out of luck.
And unfortunately if you can walk and you used to drive you probably didn’t look into this at all because you never thought it would be that big of a problem! And you don’t want to my love this… bother your children because they have to work.
One thing that every pre senior should do is plan for the what if I could drive scenario. Seniors who are still able to drive should really plan to get old. This is a real problem because even seniors are unwilling to think ahead. Yes we need to make the systems better. But we also need to stop living the way we do We have become very self centered and not used to sacrifice or working together as community
I wonder if there are any churches or secular groups who are working on this problem. I would like to join and help.
Stop
Did It needed it but didn’t!
I already help weekly at a food kitchen and clothes closet. Greeting everyone with a smile and more if they will respond is a way of life for me. I am retired from healthcare, and am following Jesus as my Lord and Savior – so I am on the lookout for needs and opportunities to reach out to those around me.
I didn’t drive!for 24 hours and instead got a ride for work but st the end of the day I didn’t it gave transportation so I had to find my way home wth public transportation.
It took me an hour and 30 minutes to get home. The bus stop left me on the corner street where I had to walk up a hill to get home. I walked for about 30 min and finally made it home.!i usually get some dinner take out but I didn’t this time because it would take me another 2 hours to get to the place and back. I ate a bowl of cereal instead.
I really didn’t do much without a car and I understand how frustrating it can be to take or plan on the public Transportation. It’s not as easy as having a car.
It makes you feel as if you are a burden to others, always reaching out for help. Almost as if you are a prisoner in your own home.
Having to depend on other means of transportation other than quickly rolling into my car is a wake up call now that I finally own a vehicle. As a senior with disabilities myself, my heart breaks for those who are relying on other forms of transportation on a daily basis. Mission accomplished.
